Zanu PF routs MDC-T in 3 run-off elections

ZANU PF has crushed the MDC-T in three council run-off elections in Matabeleland North, Manicaland and Mashonaland West to emphasize its dominance of local authorities.
The run-off elections, held on Wednesday, were called after the two parties’ candidates polled the same number of votes in the July 31 general elections.
In Ward 5 of Kusile Rural District Council in Matabeleland North, Zanu PF’s Soneni Tshuma polled 646 votes against MDC-T’s Ubunene Ncube who managed 221 votes. The pair had been tied on 419 votes.
In Mutasa Rural District Council Ward 30, Manicaland, Zanu PF’s William Ketero polled 732 to beat the MDC-T’s Elias Kembo who came in with 399 votes. The two had been tied on 692 votes on July 31.
In Kadoma, Mashonaland West, Godfrey Mavura of Zanu PF got 523 votes, while Fastmore Mandipota of MDC-T polled 212. The two candidates had each polled 545 votes in July.
The results saw Zanu PF increase its advantage in local government where it now controls 1,496 wards to the MDC-T’s 442.
Zanu PF controls 76 percent of the 1,958 wards in 92 local authorities.
President Robert Mugabe was re-elected for a new term with a landslide 61 percent of the vote to his closest rival Morgan Tsvangirai’s 34 percent. Zanu PF has a two thirds majority in Parliament.
The MDC-T has claimed the July 31 elections were rigged, but withdrew its court challenge saying it was impossible to proceed without full information and evidence it had sought from election authorities
